What We Learned
This past Sunday we shifted from Abraham and talked about Lot, who was Abraham’s nephew. They had parted ways earlier since their group was becoming very large. Lot settled into a city called Sodom. God knew that Sodom and Gomorrah were cities that were full of very serious sin. God sent 2 angels to Sodom to visit Lot who had been struggling with living in a place full of sin. We don’t know how much the people of Sodom and Gomorrah influenced Lot into doing wrong, but the Bible does tell us that “...his righteous soul was tormented by the lawless deeds he saw and heard” (2 Peter 2:8). Eventually the angels led Lot and his family out as fire fell from the sky, destroying the cities. The angels warned them not to look back or they themselves would be swept away, but Lot’s wife did look back and she was instantly turned into a pillar of salt.
Lot’s righteousness was not based on being perfect or doing more good things than bad. It is based on him trusting God, even if his faith was not perfect. Jesus was the only human to walk the earth perfectly. His death on the cross allows us to be able to be forgiven of our sins and seen as righteous if we place our faith in Him!
