What We Learned
Almost 25 years had passed since God first called Abram to move to Canaan, and more than 10 years since God had promised Abram would have a son. But Sarai, Abram’s wife, still didn’t have a child. She was really old (90 years old!) by this time so everyone thought the idea of her having a baby was crazy! But when Abram was 99 years old God spoke to him again and reminded him of His promise. He even gave Abram a new name. God reminded Abram (who is now Abraham) of the everlasting promise that ensured Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan. God even changed Sarai’s name to Sarah because the name Sarah means “mother of nations.” Not only was God promising that one day Abraham and Sarah would have a child, but He promised that they would have so many descendants they wouldn’t even be able to count them all! The reason God changed Sarai’s name and Abram’s name was to show them that they belonged to God!
God gave Abraham a new name because Abraham now belonged to Him. But one day God will give all of His children, those who have placed their faith in Him, new names. Those who have given their life to Christ will be given new bodies, new names, a new Heaven and a new Earth to live in and forever praise Jesus!
